What is a quartz worktop?
A quartz worktop is an engineered surface made with mineral ingredients, resin binders and pigments. The exact formulation varies by product. This guide explains what to check before choosing a surface, how to care for it and what affects an installed quote.

Quartz, quartzite and newer mineral surfaces are different product categories. Ask for the manufacturer, product name and current technical information so you know exactly which surface is included in your quotation.
What are quartz worktops made of?
Engineered quartz combines mineral ingredients with a resin binder and pigments. There is no single composition percentage that describes every product sold as a quartz or mineral worktop. Formulations have changed, and a familiar colour or brand name does not establish the ingredients of the slab being supplied.
For example, Cosentino describes Silestone’s evolution into mineral hybrid surfaces, using other minerals and recycled materials in place of some quartz. This is a manufacturer-specific example, rather than a specification for the whole market.
Check the current technical and safety data sheets for your chosen product. If mineral composition is part of your buying decision, ask the supplier to confirm it in writing before ordering. View a sample and, where possible, the slab layout: a small sample cannot show every vein or how an exposed edge will look.
What should you expect in everyday use?

Routine cleaning still matters
Wipe up spills and clean the surface regularly with a product approved by its manufacturer. A low-porosity surface still needs normal kitchen cleaning.
Use a chopping board
Scratch resistance is not a promise that direct cutting cannot mark the surface. Protect the worktop with a chopping board.
Protect against hot cookware
Use a suitable trivet or heat pad for hot pans and follow the manufacturer’s appliance guidance. Do not use a generic temperature figure as permission to put hot cookware directly on the slab.
Read the warranty conditions
Check registration deadlines, exclusions, cleaning requirements and the distinction between material and installation cover. Warranty length is not a guaranteed service life.

A marble-effect colour describes an appearance. It does not establish that the slab is natural marble.
