For most Stevenage homeowners, install day is the first time they have had a stone worktop fitted in their home. The process feels unfamiliar and the questions stack up. How long will it take? Do I need to be in? Can I use the kitchen the same evening? After more than a thousand installations across Stevenage and Hertfordshire we have run through these questions enough times to know exactly what helps and what gets in the way.
This page is the honest walkthrough. We cover what happens before our van arrives, what we do once we are inside, the steps you might not see and the rules to follow once we have left. Knowing what to expect on the day is the single best preparation you can do. Most install day stress comes from uncertainty rather than anything actually going wrong.
A well-prepared kitchen turns a six-hour install into a four-hour one. The difference is almost always made the night before.

How install day actually splits up
A typical Stevenage install runs between four and six hours. Here is roughly how the time is spent.
Five distinct stages each day
The visible work is dry fitting and sealing. The two stages people remember most clearly. What sits before and after them matters just as much. Setup, levelling and the final polish each take longer than most homeowners expect because they are the parts that determine whether the installation lasts five years or twenty-five.
The unloading and carrying takes the most physical effort. A standard 3-metre run of 30mm quartz weighs around 100kg. Sign-off at the end is short but essential. We walk you through the finished install and capture any concerns in writing before we leave.

How install day varies across Stevenage homes
Different properties have different install profiles. Here is what to expect across the local mix.
New builds in Great Ashby
Square cabinets, level walls and easy parking. These are the fastest installs we do. Often complete by lunchtime with the longer run pieces lifted as a single slab and minimal levelling work needed.
1930s semis near Old Town
Period properties usually have walls that are not perfectly square and access can be tighter. Plan for the fitters to spend longer on cabinet levelling. Restricted parking can also add 20-30 minutes.
Family homes in Chells
Standard install profile. Two fitters, one van, four to six hours. Most family kitchens have one or two cutouts and a straightforward U-shape or L-shape that fits without complications.
Renovated council homes
Often quick installs because of the smaller kitchen size. Watch for older cabinet bases that may need additional support before the slab can be set. We carry the materials to remedy this on the day.
What your install day fee actually covers
Stevenage quotes vary in what they bundle into the install. Here is what a properly itemised quote should include at each tier.
- Two in-house fitters
- Single sink and hob cutout
- Square or pencil round edge
- Standard silicone seal
- Old worktop removal included
- Multiple cutouts and tap holes
- Bevelled or chamfered edge profile
- Upstands and splashbacks fitted
- Lead fitter on-site all day
- Mitred and waterfall edges
- Bookmatched join alignment
- Aftercare kit and on-site briefing
If a quote bundles install into a vague headline figure, ask for it itemised separately. It is the best signal of whether you are dealing with in-house or subcontracted fitters.
Wait 24 hours after install before using your sink and a further 48 hours before applying any cleaning products. The silicone needs to fully cure before water touches it.

Good install signs vs warning signs on the day
A quick reference for what a proper install looks like in real time, against the early warnings that something is going wrong.
| Good install signs | Warning signs | Walk-away signs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | On time, photo ID | Late, no contact | Different team than expected |
| Setup | Protective sheeting laid | Quick floor cover | No floor protection |
| Levelling | Spirit level on every cabinet | Eyeball level only | Skipped entirely |
| Dry fit | Yes, before bonding | Partial | Straight to glue |
| Joins | Match cutting plan | Slight position change | Different than agreed |
| Sealing | Even silicone bead | Some gaps | Visible gaps along back |
| Sign-off | Walkthrough & paperwork | Quick check | Team leaves without you |
7 things to do the night before install day
A small amount of prep the evening before makes a huge difference to how smoothly the day runs. Here is exactly what to do.
Clear all worktop surfaces completely
Kettles, toasters, knife blocks, fruit bowls, anything stored on the worktop. Clear the lot. The fitters need full access to every surface they are replacing or fitting against.
Empty the cupboards directly below the worktop
The fitters often need to work underneath to secure brackets or check supports. An empty cupboard saves time and protects your china and glassware from accidental damage.
Disconnect plumbed appliances if needed
Dishwashers and washing machines that sit under the worktop need disconnecting. We can do it on the day if you have isolation valves but it is faster if a plumber has already done it.
Arrange parking for our van
We need access to a space within 30 metres of your front door for offloading. If your road is permit-only, please sort the visitor permit before the day.
Make sure someone over 18 is home all day
An adult needs to be on-site to grant access, sign paperwork and confirm sign-off at the end of the day. Working from home counts. Just be available when we knock.
Plan an alternative space for breakfast and lunch
The kitchen will be unusable for most of the day. Have the kettle plugged in elsewhere and a sandwich plan in mind. The team will need access to your space for several hours.
Have your aftercare questions ready
The lead fitter will brief you on cleaning, sealing cure times and care products at sign-off. Write your questions down beforehand so nothing gets forgotten in the post-install excitement.

Three things that derail install day
When install day runs late or has problems, it is almost always one of these three things rather than anything to do with the slab itself.
Cabinets not levelled before fitters arrive
If your kitchen units have been newly installed by another trade and the bases are not perfectly level, our fitters have to spend an hour or two correcting it. This is the single most common reason an install runs late.
Sink or hob delivered late
We need the sink and hob present on install day so the cutouts can be checked against the actual fixtures. If they have not arrived, we may need to come back for a second visit to seal the cutouts properly.
Parking issues at the property
Without space to offload the slabs near your front door, we can lose 30 minutes or more carrying heavy quartz over distance. On permit roads in Stevenage, please sort visitor permits in advance.

Quick answers
How long does a quartz worktop installation take?
A standard Stevenage family kitchen runs to between four and six hours from the moment the fitters arrive to sign-off. Larger or more complex kitchens with multiple cutouts and bookmatched joins can run to seven or eight hours. We will give you an estimated time when we book the install.
Do I need to be home all day?
Someone over the age of 18 needs to be at the property to grant access and sign off the work at the end of the day. You do not have to watch the whole installation. Many of our customers work from home or pop out for short periods provided they are reachable by phone.
Can I use my kitchen the same evening?
The worktop surface itself is ready to use immediately. The silicone sealant around the sink, joins and back walls needs 24 hours to cure fully. Avoid running water near the sink for that period and avoid placing heavy objects on the worktop for the first few hours.
What if I am not happy with the finish?
Reputable installers will rework anything you are not happy with on the day. Raise concerns at sign-off rather than after the team has left. Most issues we see at sign-off are about silicone bead consistency or polish marks which are quick to address while the team is still on-site.
Will the fitters reconnect my hob and sink?
Our fitters position the hob and seal the undermount sink in place. They do not reconnect gas, electrics or plumbing. You will need a qualified gas engineer or electrician for those tasks. If you arrange the trade for the day after install, you can usually have the kitchen fully back in use within 48 hours.
